01What does Sensical do?
Sensical is a multidisciplinary cooperative in Barcelona that designs, builds and deploys open technology for research, public-interest and creative projects. Some of our main areas of work are environmental data collection (air quality sensors, mesh networks, data validation), co-creation and participatory design, and applied technologies for the arts.
02What kind of organisation is Sensical?
Sensical SCCL is a Catalan cooperative (Societat Cooperativa Catalana Limitada) founded in Barcelona in October 2026. It is owned and run by its members.
03How big is the Sensical team?
Sensical is a small team of fewer than ten people: five core members plus a network of trusted collaborators we bring in when a project needs specific skills.
04Who do you work with?
We work with research institutions and universities, companies, public bodies, cultural organisations, artists and non-profits. Between us we have worked with organisations such as Fab Lab Barcelona, the BBC, CCCB, Medialab Matadero and Sónar.
05Where do you work? Do you work remotely?
We are based in Barcelona and work both remotely and on site, with clients and partners across Europe and internationally. Field deployments and workshops can be run wherever the project needs them.
06In the field of environmental monitoring, what do you do?
We develop transversal solutions, such as Meshtastic-based sensor networks, and mainly work on air quality, including particulate matter (PM), chemical pollutants and CO2, using affordable, open-source and research-grade sensors. We also have experience with biodiversity monitoring using camera traps and sound monitoring tools such as BirdNet.
07Can Sensical join EU-funded project consortia?
Yes. Sensical can join Horizon Europe, Erasmus+ and other EU-funded consortia as a (technical, research, SME) partner, and our members have experience in many R&D projects of this kind. Our Participant Identification Code (PIC) is 864390281.
08How do you handle personal data and GDPR?
We design data collection to comply with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and can host project data within the EU. We do not currently hold certifications such as ISO 27001.
09Will our team be able to continue on its own after the project?
Yes, that is part of how we work. We involve your team throughout the design and development process and offer training, documentation and mentoring so you can take ownership of the result when we finish.
10What doesn't Sensical do?
We are not a generic web, app or marketing agency, and we do not take on surveillance or military projects.
11How does a project with Sensical start?
Projects start with a conversation: email us at
info@sensical.es with a short description of your idea or challenge. We then agree on goals and scope with you and prepare a proposal with approach, timeline and budget.
12How do you price your work for clients?
For client work, we price per project: well-defined projects are usually quoted at a fixed price, while open-ended R&D, mentoring or support work is billed on a time-and-materials (day rate) basis. We agree the model with you before work starts.
13Who owns the intellectual property? Is everything open source?
We favour open-source software and open-hardware licences by default, but ownership and licensing are agreed project by project. We are happy to sign NDAs and to work on confidential projects.
